Battle For Ebonyi South: Confusion As LP Produces Two Candidates

Two candidates, Hon Linus Okorie and Mr. Nwachukwu Nwabueze yesterday emerged in the just concluded Labour Party (LP) Primaries for the Ebonyi South Senatorial seat By-election slated for Feb 3, 2024.

Hon Okorie had emerged as a candidate from the first primaries held at Amuro/Mgbom Community Primary School Afikpo.

In the second primaries which it’s venue is yet to be ascertained, a businessman, Mr. Nwabueze Nwachukwu emerged from the second primary, reportedly held at an unknown location in the state.

Okorie had in the 2023 general election contested for the same senatorial seat but lost to the former Governor of Ebonyi state, David Umahi, who later resigned to become the Minister of Works.

The Chairman of the electoral committee, that declared Hon Okorie Winner, Comrade Ayo Olorufemi, who declared Okorie as the winner, said that three aspirants participated in the primary election.

He noted that Okorie won with 40 votes, defeating Nwabueze Ogo Eze, with 10 votes, and Fred Okereke, with seven votes.

As at the time of filing this report, the LP in Ebonyi state is yet to confirm her authentic candidate for the next month’s bye election while both candidates are claiming the ticket.
