Mass Defection Hits Kaduna APC Following El- Rufai’s Resignation

In Kaduna State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has seen a mass exodus after the party’s immediate former governor, Nasiru El-Rufai, resigned.

A number of resignation letters obtained by our correspondent on Monday demonstrated the mass exodus of party members who are thought to be El-Rufai’s supporters from the ruling party. This occurs just hours after El-Rufai announced his decision to switch to the Social Democratic Party. Former El-Rufai commissioners also submitted their resignations from the party in a similar way.

The party’s ward chairmen received resignation letters from former Local Government Commissioner Ja’afaru Ibrahim Sani and Human Services and Social Development Commissioner Hajiya Hafsat Mohammed Baba on Monday.

“With the hatred and disdain shown to us by the leadership of the party we worked hard to nurture, it has become compelling to seek another platform in our desire to bring development and prosperity to our dear people,” it says in part of Sani’s resignation.

I therefore write to let you know that, following extensive reflection, reassessment, and discussion with important parties in Anchau, Kubau LGA, and Kaduna State, I have decided to resign from the APC with immediate effect.

“As I begin my journey, I want to express my gratitude to you and all APC members, as well as the voters in the Ward, Kubau LGA, and the State, for your support as Chairman of the APC Stakeholders, Kubau LGA. I look back on the party’s historic electoral wins in the ward and local government area during past general elections with a sense of accomplishment. In the annals of local government party politics, the momentous achievement will live on forever.

“Receive my constant assurances of my best wishes.

For your Ja’afaru Ibrahim Sani, please find enclosed my temporary membership registration card.

Additionally, Hafsat Baba’s letter partially states, “The Chairman may take note that I entered the discussions to build the APC as the then-current National Woman Leader of the now-defunct Action Congress of Nigeria. We joined the merger in order to firmly establish democratic justice and order in the nation’s political arena, which desperately needed a new political and governing path.

But the party has lost focus and direction, and it has strayed from its core values of peace, justice, and togetherness. Continued affiliation with the party in its current form goes against my principles as a staunch supporter and adherent of these ideals (Aqida).

There will be more political decisions and acts taken as I and others of a similar mindset think fit and as may help us stay true to the basic values of justice and political order that still exist today.

In response, the Kaduna APC stated that it was not worried about El-Rufai’s defection.
