Ohanaeze Ndigbo Calls For The Immediate Arrest Of Rep Ikwechegh For Assaulting An Uber Driver

The Apex Igbo sociocultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, stands resolutely in the defense of justice and the enforcement of the rule of law. We unequivocally condemn the abhorrent and disgraceful conduct displayed by Honorable Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives representing Aba North and South, who was recently implicated in an egregious assault on an Abuja-based Uber driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya. This despicable act is not merely a grave infringement on the rights of an individual but also a flagrant violation of the dignity and cultural ethos for which the Igbo people stand.

In light of the troubling events that transpired, we call upon all well-meaning Nigerians, particularly the political class and civil society, to vociferously denounce any form of hate speech, intimidation, or physical aggression, especially when perpetrated by individuals in positions of power. Such behavior is intolerable and must not be brushed under the carpet. It is crucial for the integrity of our democracy and the safety of our citizenry that those who wield authority do so with the utmost responsibility and respect for the law.

The recent confrontation, captured in videos that have since proliferated across social media, illustrates not only the audacity of Rep Ikwechegh but also his shocking disregard for the sanctity of human life. The threats made against Mr. Abuwatseya, including those ominously suggesting he could “vanish without a trace,” reveal a deeply disturbing pattern of behavior that is unbecoming of any public servant, let alone one tasked with representing the interests of the citizens.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo finds it imperative to remind our leaders and citizens alike of the undeniable historical lessons we’ve learned as a society. The unfortunate incident involving former Senator Elisha Abbo, who was similarly implicated in an assault on an individual in 2019, stands as a clear example of why accountability must be enforced uniformly and without prejudice. Just as Senator Abbo was brought to justice, so too must Rep Ikwechegh face the consequences of his actions, regardless of his political status.

Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, further underscores that our organization will not stand idly by while vulnerable Nigerians, particularly those in precarious economic situations, are subjected to unfair treatment and violence by those who hold power. The actions of Rep Ikwechegh reflect negatively not only on himself but also on the entire Southeast region that he represents. It is imperative that the Inspector General of Police takes immediate action by officially inviting Rep Ikwechegh for questioning and ensures that appropriate legal proceedings are initiated against him.

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, alongside all conscious citizens of Nigeria, demand nothing less than the immediate arrest and prosecution of Honorable Alex Ikwechegh. This must serve as a pivotal moment, a clarion call for all public office holders to recognize that no one is above the law. As we strive to build a society founded on equality, respect, and justice, we must resolutely uphold the principle that those in power are accountable for their actions and must serve as exemplars rather than transgressors of our societal values.

In conclusion, we urge every Nigerian to reflect upon the gravity of this situation. It is not just an attack on one man; it is an assault on our collective integrity as a nation. Let us unite in the steadfast defense of human rights, uphold the sanctity of the law, and demand justice for all.

Signed,

Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro
Secretary General
Ohanaeze Ndigbo
