NLC Strike: Partial Compliance witnessed In Ebonyi

The indefinite strike action declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC yesterday witnessed Partial Compliance in Ebonyi State as some banks, staff of the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki in the State were seen at their different duty post.
Other Government establishment within the State capital that staff were seen at their duty post includes staff of the Ebonyi State Judiciary, staff at the state Secretariat, the Ebonyi State Library board, Government House Cabinet office and staff of Ebonyi State college of Education, Ikwo.
At the branches of Zenith Bank, First Bank, GTB and UBA banks along Ogoja road and Waterworks road, it was observed that bank customers were seen in their numbers waiting to gain access to the bank, but security operatives at the bank insisted that they will not open until they get clarification from the head offices in Lagos.
Speaking to journalists, the Public Relations Officer of the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo, Mr. Ikechukwu Ubochi said that staff of the University came to work adding that some others were absent.
At the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki AE-FETHA, administrative staff of the hospital, doctors, nurses and consultants were seen going about their normal business . At the emergency unit, it was observed that patients were being attended to while those at the records and other departments were also busy with their duties.
The State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC, Prof Egwu Oguguo was also seen monitoring the level of compliance of the industrial action.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson, Academic Staff Union of University, ASUU, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike branch, Ebonyi State (FUNAI ASUU), Comrade Louis Omeny has said that violators of the indefinite strike action declared by the NLC would be sanctioned in accordance with the constitution.
The Chairperson, in a statement signed by the Secretary of the branch, Comrade Joseph Chukwu and made available to Journalists said the branch after it’s emergency executive council meeting in Abakaliki set up Branch Strike Monitoring Committee.
He said that the 7-man committee headed by a member of the executive council is to ensure total compliance to the national directive on the strike.
He said the national executive council approved ASUU’s participation in the strike because of the credibility of the present NLC leadership.
The statement reminded members that the strike is total, comprehensive and indefinite, adding that as long as the strike lasts, there would be no teaching, faculty/departmental board meetings or any other statutory meeting involving ASUU FUNAI members.
Recall that the NLC declared nationwide strike effective midnight of November 13, following federal government’s refusal to implement agreements entered into with labour for over time.
